Dental  Emergencies
Most dental emergencies can be prevented
by maintaining good oral health, getting regular exams and cleanings, and wearing a custom mouth guard while playing sports.

·        What do I do if my temporary crown comes off?
If your temporary crown falls off don’t panic. Simply put it back on using denture adhesive, which can be found in any drug store. Put a little of the adhesive in the temporary crown, place it back on the tooth and gently bite down. Be sure it is in the proper position. This should hold it in place until your next visit to seat the permanent crown.

·        What to do if you are experiencing extremely severe tooth pain:
First, rinse your entire mouth thoroughly with warm salt water. Gently floss around the tooth to remove any food particles that are between the teeth. Take an over the counter pain relieving drug such as Tylenol or Advil. If it continues to hurt call our office to set up an appointment to properly diagnose and treat the problem. By keeping regular appointments for cleanings and exams you can avoid problems such as this.

·        What if my tooth becomes loose?
There are a variety of reasons you may have a loose tooth. Loose teeth can be a serious matter. This problem, left untreated, may lead to losing the tooth. Periodontal disease may be the cause of a loose tooth, or sometimes teeth can be knocked loose in an accident, a fall, or while playing a contact sport. Treatment for loose teeth may include a root canal, periodontal treatment, or if the tooth cannot be saved there are options such as dental implants, bridges, or removable partials. If you have a loose tooth, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, and call our office to schedule an appointment.

·        What do I do if my permanent tooth comes out?
If your whole tooth comes out or gets knocked out, do not rinse it or try to clean it, doing so may damage the surrounding tissues. Do not touch the root of the tooth. Place it in a cup of milk. If you do not have access to milk (for example it happens while playing a sport) keep the tooth moist, preferable in your mouth. See a dentist as soon as possible or go to the emergency room if there is not one available.

·        What if I bite my tongue severely or have a lip injury?
If you have bitten your tongue or lip and it is severe, gently wipe the area clean with a wet cloth. Apply a cold compress to the area, this will help minimize bleeding and swelling.  If bleeding doesn’t stop, go to the nearest emergency room.

·        What if I lose a filling?
If a filling comes out be sure to keep the tooth clean and clear of food particles. Ortho wax can be purchased at most drug stores, and may help the pain by filling in the tooth temporarily. First, be sure the tooth is free from food particles before putting the wax in. If needed, take an over the counter pain reliever. Avoid eating or drinking anything that is very hot or very cold, as the tooth is most likely to be sensitive. Chew food on the opposite side as the lost filling. Call our office to schedule an appointment.
